Aunt Lil Wins King Arthur Heritage Bake Off!

I have exciting news! Aunt Lil’s wonderful recipe for Rich Coffee Cake won a blue ribbon at the recent King Arthur Flour/Historic Deerfield Heritage Family Recipe Bake Off!

Last week I was notified that Aunt Lil’s recipe had been chosen to be a semi-finalist in the contest. To enter the final phase of the competition, I needed to bring my baked recipe to Historic Deerfield (in Massachusetts) on Saturday by noon for judging. There were fifteen finalists.  A panel of five judges, including two local chefs, a cookbook author and founder of Bakepedia.com, a history professor and the head of Historic Deerfield, sampled all the goodies and read the stories we submitted about our cherished family recipes.

In preparation I think I baked the coffee cake five times over the week to make sure I perfected it. That’s a lot of coffee cake and much of it ended up in the garbage as failures. By week’s end I was pleased with my results, but still nervous about entering my first competition.

On the day of the award ceremony, Dan and I drove with coffee cake in hand three hours to Historic Deerfield (we also should have won an award for contestant driving the furthest!). We had some time to kill so wandered around this amazing historic town, touring homes and eating lunch at the Deerfield Inn. Finally it was time for the award ceremony so we headed back to the Visitor’s Center.

Prizes were awarded for Most Creative Recipe, Best Family Story, and Best Recipe. I am thrilled to report that I won the Best Family Story Award. I know Aunt Lil would be proud.

What did I win? A cool blue ribbon, The All-Purpose Baking Cookbook put out by King Arthur and a $50 gift certificate to purchase supplies from their mail order catalog.

Want to read a version of the story I submitted (I added more about Aunt Lil and took out the history of coffee cakes) and check out the recipe? You can find it here at my earlier blog post from January 2013.
